Composition & Photography

I recently got a camera to film myself playing the piano for another creative project. Since it was lying around, I took it outside with me to take some pictures. Turns out photography is a lot fun! I was never very interested in anything beyond what my outdated iPhone could offer but the difference in quality between even an entry-level professional camera like mine and a smartphone is immense. It's also quite interesting to learn and experience the technical side of photography and exposure. Here are some pictures from tonight:

The reason I'm blogging about this it is that I realised that photography is the perfect way to practice composition. Where drawing or painting a scene only allows me to pick a composition once or twice an hour at most, I can shoot dozens of pictures in that time and get feedback instantly. Of course, these are different art forms and I'm more interested in becoming a painter than becoming a professional photographer but many of the principles I learn in one should transfer over. Since I'm interested in people (I know it may not always seem that way but it's true!) and I want to paint portraits, I got a portrait lens to go with my camera.
